Embroidery style guide: selling hats on demand with Teespring

Teespring offers several high-quality hat product options for sellers including trucker hats, snapback hats, dad hats, and beanies. Hat designs are embroidered and each item is made to order. You can customize your hat selection with unique designs featuring up to six colors.

Once you’ve unlocked hats you’ll see them in the Teespring Launcher. Learn more about how to unlock our specialty products here. Please note there are no upfront inventory costs, however, hats do incur a one-time, $5 digitizing fee per design. Each hat design must be digitized before a listing is created. The digitizing fee is only charged once and is deducted from a seller’s account when the new hat listing is created. Please note beanies require a separate $5 digitizing fee because they require a different design file than the caps.

Keep in mind you will need to create your own hat designs using software like Adobe Illustrator (vectorized .eps file format). Designs submitted that do not meet design file requirements will be rejected. Download the hat design template to ensure your design is formatted correctly and features available thread color options.

Why do files need to be digitized?

Embroidery digitizing is the process of converting a design file into a stitch file. Once digitized an embroidery machine is able to sew the design onto a hat. To sell hats with Teespring you only need to digitize your design file once. This one-time, $5 digitizing fee is deducted from a seller’s account when a new hat or beanie listing is created. Please note beanies require a separate $5 digitizing fee because beanie designs must be formatted differently to be embroidered onto knitted fabric.

Hat design do’s and don’ts

Hat designs are bit more complex than other garments; this is because designs are stitched (not printed). For this reason, it’s important to understand what designs work and don’t work.

Density

Design line thickness can’t be smaller than 4pt; any fonts/texts used should be at least 18pts. Please make sure all the elements in your design are no smaller than 1/8″.

Detail

Go for simple designs, avoid using too much design detail.

Spacing

Negative space between elements needs to be at least 5mm.

Effects

Avoid using gradient design effects.

Simplicity

Avoid using uneven prints.

Size

Avoid including thin/small design elements.

Signed up to be added for hats when you first announced and it’s still not an option for us. People are requesting hats from us. Any idea what the wait time will be until we’re added? I know teespring isn’t our only option for POD products, particularly hats, but we’ve had a good experience here and would like to keep using its features.

This is disheartening, I have several followers that are really looking forward to hats. Probably at least 15. How many sales do I need to make in order to make hats? I love the site and its integration abilities but if I have to go through another site to produce hats I may not open this store.

        thanks!
